Grandview residents enjoy food, entertainment at picnic!

MAHONING TWP. — About 70 Grandview Nursing and Rehabilitation residents celebrated Labor Day Wednesday with a picnic in the auditorium because of the heat.

“This is our ninth picnic of the summer and the second time inside. The first was because of rain,” said Lisa Boone, of the activities department.

Activities Director Loretta Neyhard said they held everything inside “because we didn’t want to chance anyone getting sick or passing out.”

Jim McClincy, known as the singing mailman from the Sunbury area, provided entertainment.

He invited residents to sing along as he played on his guitar and banjo. In honor of Labor Day, he sang the national anthem.

He also led singing of “Happy Birthday” to resident Lois Gass, since Wednesday was her 89th birthday.

Gass said she was surprised they sang to her. She is a retired teacher from Line Mountain School District, where she taught for 32 years.

“The residents love him,” Neyhard said. McClincy said he visits Grandview five to six times a year along with a number of nursing homes, high-rises and day cares.

Neyhard thanked the volunteers and staff for helping with the picnic. She said residents made refrigerator pickles for the picnic while the staff grilled cheeseburgers and hotdogs, made salads and prepared cantaloupe and watermelon among other foods. Volunteers and staff took residents’ orders and served them. “We couldn’t do it without our devoted staff and volunteers,” she said.

Beth Kressler worked 22 years in the kitchen at Grandview and now volunteers for picnics and other events. “They call when they need something done for a meal. I love doing it,” she said.
